About Roos Chews
Launched at the start of season 2019, Roos Chews is the culmination of a huge team effort by Mt Lawley Inglewood Junior Football Club parents who desired healthy and diverse food options on game days and an enhanced sense of community at the club.
Aussie Rules footy clubs are at the heart of communities – and Roos Chews is at the heart of MLIJFC.
Decked out in blue and white, Roos Chews is a meeting place with a welcoming atmosphere, serving freshly made healthy options as well as traditional footy fare. With table seating, families can enjoy lunch overlooking our three playing ovals as well as keeping a keen eye on the AFL game when it's on TV.
Roos Chews operates wholly on the support of parents who are asked to help cook and clean in shifts before, during and after games and is supported by a dedicated sub-committee.
About the food
Our inaugural signature dish, the BLT, is made of lean shortcut bacon and salad. We use only free-range eggs in our egg and bacon burgers and our sausages are gluten-free, pre-ordered from Dave the butcher. Carrot, celery and hummus packs, made in-house, provide some crunch and, as winter approaches, there’ll be a soup-of-the-day most game days and training nights. We collect our rolls early on Saturday and Sundays, straight from the Brumby’s oven. Roos Chews serves small buckets of hot chips, hash browns and toasted sandwiches on wholemeal bread. Did someone say burgers? For Roos derby matches and special games, we offer the Derby Deluxe: lean patty, cheese, caramelised onions, salad, pickled cucumbers and secret sauce. Our drinks fridge is stocked mainly through donations as all Roos families as asked to ‘bring a carton’ of juice boxes, water or soft drink during the season to keep running costs down.
About the future
The newly formed MLIJFC canteen sub-committee meets every week to plan our menu and try to ensure the smooth operation of Roos Chews both on Saturday and Sundays, given the fixtures. We have 15 teams and 130 Auskickers and their families to consider, plus visiting teams. By the time our new club rooms are built by the City of Stirling we hope our kitchen comes complete with a function room where we can hold regular club events.
Testimonial
“I love the new canteen Roos Chews. The club as a whole is more welcoming and inviting now. Well done to all those that helped. I love coming to the club more now. BLT on Sunday was delish, great food and drink options. Keep up the great work everyone.’’ - Jacob’s mum, Year 11/12.
